   NetLink - Driver for Communication with SIMATIC S7 PLCs

NetLink – a driver used for communication between asix SCADA computers and SIMATIC S7 PLCs via an MPI/PROFIBUS link.

A significant advantage of the driver is that it uses the cheap and easy for configuration NETLink Lite module - an Ethernet gateway for MPI and PROFIBUS networks of S7 PLCs. This way of communication is an attractive alternative in relation to solutions based on SOFTNET software and SIEMENS CP5611/CP5613 cards.

The NETLink Lite module is made by Systeme Helmholz GmbH (www.helmholz.com), and distributed in Poland by MEDIOTECH (www.mediotech.pl).

For using with asix system it is sufficed to buy the cheapest version of the NETLink Lite module: order code 700-880-MPI10 (without S7 driver), an approximate price 345 EUR (in February 2006).

Application of the NETLink Lite module for communication between S7 and a PG/PC computer may be realized with use of a hub or switch (Fig.2.) or with use of a crossover adapter that permits direct connection of NETLink Lite to a laptop or PC (Fig.3.).

Limitations of using NetLink Lite:

a) the module can handle maximally 2 clients at the same time;

b) during communication between a Netlink Lite module and PLCs (more than one) it is necessary to take into account a time needed for the module to switch over between PLCs (an exemplary configuration having been tested consisted of 3 PLCs, and the time of switching amounted to about 80 msec/PLC).

The NetLink driver needs ASMEN v. 4.6.8 or newer one.

To get more information on NetLink driver configuration, download user's manual.
